General Information Upon The Immigration Situation

There has to be kept in mind that, in its general sense, immigration refers to the movement of people between countries. Modern immigration implies long-term, legal, permanent residence, while the movement of people has existed throughout human history at various levels. Also, pay attention to the fact that short-term visitors and tourists are considered non-immigrants. When people are crossing the boarder of the country in a way that directly violates the immigration laws of the destination country, the process is known as illegal immigration. According to this definition, an illegal immigrant is a foreigner who either illegally crossed an international political border, be it by land, water, or air, or one who legally entered a country but nevertheless overstays his/her visa in order to live and/or work therein. Often treated as a form of immigration, the seasonal labor migration is an actuality.

An important aspect which has to be taken into consideration is being represented by the fact that the modern concept of immigration is being related to the development of nation-states and nationality law. Also, there has to be kept in mind that, as residency of non-citizens is subject to conditions set by immigration law, citizens in a nation-state confers an inalienable right of residence in that state. Over the last few years, immigration has been made a political issue by the emergence of nation-states, as it is the homeland of a nation defined by shared ethnicity and/or culture, by definition.

In absolute terms, the global volume of immigration is high, but in relative terms it proves to be low. The highest numbers have been registered within the Middle East, some parts of Europe, small areas of South East Asia, and a few spots in the West Indies. The statistics have shown that these are the main destinations.
